How Big Should the Tank be?

Whether you have limited space or limitless space, there are aquariums that will accommodate your size. Tanks come in many, many shapes and sizes. From what i have seen, the most common shape is a simple rectangle. There are also cubes, hexagons, and tanks specifically designed to fit in corners.

Remember, there are many other things you have to buy to maintain an aquarium, a fish tank is only a glass box until you add plants, gravel, decor, and fish :)

How Many Fish Can Fit?
As you may have guessed, for the size of the tank, the bigger the better. I've heard rules such as "one inch of fish per gallon" but I just use common sense. Depending on what type of fish you want, you might need a very tall tank for angelfish, or a very wide one for those fast horizontal swimmers. Finding the maximum size of the particular fish you want is important too, unless you are willing to buy a bigger tank later on.

Another important thing to ponder is whether the fish are livebearers or not. Do they lay eggs, or do they have babies like humans do? It is fairly easy for live bearers to breed in home aquariums, and before long, you may have dozens of babies swimming around.
